I would like to submit one of very common interpretations in Chinese writings concerning the discripition of post-heaven diagram as follows for your reference. It starts from Zhen and is unfolded clock-wise according to Shuo Gua, Chapter 5.
All creatures originate from Zhen (quake, the thunder); therefore Zhen is located in the east where the sun rises. It is also defined as the spring equinox (Mar. 20 or 21), as this is the time wherein all living things start sprouting and incubating like the thunder arousing all creatures.
All creatures grow in unison at Xun (entrance, the wind) like the wind bowing sunflowers widely over grasslands; therefore Xun is in the southeast and also defined as the beginning of summer (May 5 or 6).
Li (clinging, fire) signifies brightness which makes all creatures visible and see one another. It is a trigram of the south, as according to Chinese geography, the south is a place where more sunshine is available. It is also defined as the summer solstice (Jun. 21 or 22) like all creatures growing prosperously and forming their shapes.
Kun (submissiveness, the earth) is the earth from which all creatures are nourished like the plant grows fruits; therefore it is said ‘to be served by Kun’. It is defined as the southeast and the beginning of autumn (Aug. 7 or 8).
Dui (joy, the marsh) is the autumnal equinox (Sept. 23 or 24) wherein all creatures grow mature and become joyful due to the fruitful harvest; therefore it is said: joy is that which is expressed in the sign of Dui. It is in the west.
Battling at Qian (perseverance, the sky) signifies that masculinity and the femininity shift, i.e. masculinity is replaced by femininity. Qian is a trigram of the northwest and is defined as the beginning of winter (Nov. 7 0r 8), as masculinity has been declining.
Kan (the abyss, water) is water. In comparison with Li: fire, water is cold as the north; therefore it is a trigram of the north as well as the trigram of toil as all creatures get tired after having worked hard for an entire year, they go home to which all creatures belong. Therefore it is said: toil at Kan. It is defined as the winter solstice (Dec. 21 or 22).
Gen (keeping still, the mountain) is the trigram of the northeast. All creatures have accomplished their tasks and the new ones are about to start; therefore it is said that accomplishment is the term of Gen. It is defined as the beginning of spring (Feb. 4 or 5).
